By Jocelyn P. Alvarez

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct.8 (PIA) - - To update stakeholders on the nutritional status of Filipino children based on the results of the “Survey on Updating of the Nutritional Status of Selected Filipinos” conducted in 2011, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) recently conducted a regional dissemination forum for the purpose.

The forum, held in one of the local hotels here was attended by members of the Regional Development Council (RDC), the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC), Provincial Nutrition Action Officers (PNAOs), representatives from the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the region involved in food, nutrition and health programs.

DOST 9 Information Officer Thelma Diego in a press statement said “it is hoped that the survey results could be used to recommend possible action agenda in the local policy-making and program planning.”

Aside from the highlights of the survey, FNRI also made a presentation on the “High Impact Technology Solutions (HITS) relevant to the nutritional status of Filipino children and “Action Points for Application of the 2011 Nutrition Survey Data” after which a “Regional Development/Action Plan: Workshop” followed.

The forum ended with the presentation of workshop output.

The FNRI, is one of the research and development institutes (RDIs) of the  DOST.  The institute is mandated to 1) conduct research that defines the citizen’s nutritional status, with reference particularly to the malnutrition problem, its causes and effects and identify alternative solutions to them; 2) develop and recommend policy actions, strategies, programs and projects addressing the malnutrition problem for implementation by the appropriate agencies; and 3) disseminate research findings and recommendations to the relevant end-users.
