DIPOLOG CITY, JAN.12 (PIA)---The Provincial Health Office of Zamboanga del Norte headed by Dr. Luayon has not recorded a single case of leptospirosis in the province during 2011.
Rommel Jamolod, Nurse III of the Zamboanga del Norte PHO said, based on the reports submitted by the Rural Health Units of the different municipalities, including the two cities of Dipolog and Dapitan, no one was sick of leptospirosis despite the recent flashflood caused by typhoon Sendong.
Among the municipalities greatly affected by Sendong are the municipalities of Polanco, Katipunan, Dipolog City and Dapitan city.
Jamolod said leptospirosis comes from the bacteria called leptospira carried by floodwaters and garbage.
Some of the symptoms of a person with leptospirosis include continuous fever, headache, stomach ache, muscle pain reddening of eyes, and vomiting.
Thus, Zamboanga del Norte PHO advised those affected by the said ailment to immediately go to the doctor or to the nearest RHU at the municipalities for medication.
It maybe recalled that in 2010, health authorities declared an outbreak in Barangay Mantibo, Sibuco, after 18 cases of leptospirosis have been monitored in the area.
However, the illness was prevented from spreading after Governor Rolando Yebes directed the Provincial Health Office to distribute medicine to the affected barangay.
Despite perfect score last year, the PHO vows to continue campaign against leptospirosis and monitor the over-all health condition throughput the province. (ATR/PIA9-Zambo Norte)
