DIPOLOG CITY, Jan. 21 (PIA) - - Bracing for erratic climactic condition nowadays, all the barangays of this city have been urged to prepare their respective risk reduction management action plans.
The city government headed by Mayor Evelyn T. Uy has directed the barangay chairmen to draw up their own action plans in preparation for any disaster wrought by climate change.
It can be recalled that Republic Act (RA) 10121 otherwise known as the “Disaster Risk Management Act of 2010” has sought to strengthen the capacity of both the national government agencies (NGAs) and the local government units (LGUs) by drawing up action plans to reduce disaster risk and improve disaster response capabilities.
Under RA 10121, all government agencies including the LGUs are also urged to adopt and implement a “coherent, comprehensive, integrated, efficient and responsive disaster risk reduction program.”
Recently, the neighboring cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro were severely hit by flashfloods wrought by typhoon Sendong that left thousands dead and missing.
The damage left by Sendong to crops and livestock in Zamboanga del Norte including the cities of Dipolog and Dapitan was estimated at P26 million as reported by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA). (FPG/PIA-Zamboanga del Norte)
