ISABELA CITY, BASILAN – Close to 30 Indigenous People (IP)- college students of Basilan
Province undergo a two-day Journalistic Writing Workshop here on June 3-4 to
equip them with basic knowledge and skills in news writing thru workshops.
The activity aims to develop and
enhance the journalistic talents and skills of IP college students with emphasis
on climate change adaptation. It also aims to teach the IP students correct
styles in writing print releases/feature stories; to acquaint IP students with
the nature and effects of climate change and other environmental issues; to
enable them to come up with stories or articles featuring their culture,
customs, traditions to promote inter-cultural understanding among the people in
the region.
Before the start of the
workshop/seminar proper, one participant articulated her expectations saying “I
really hope that we could establish friendship and learn a lot from this
workshop.”
Another participant also said that
this is her first time to attend such kind of training/workshop and she thanked
the organizer for such opportunity.
Learning is more effective when
environment is not intimidating. “We expect lecturers to be friendly and funny,
not intimidating,” expressed one participant on her expectations over the
lecturers.
The Journalistic Writing Workshop
include lectures on Basic News Writing; Workshop & Critiquing; Social Media
Utilization; Video Showing on Climate Change and BBL and lecture on Editorial
Writing.
The activity is a joint effort of the
Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the U.S Embassy and the National Commission
on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).
