ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Nov 22 (PIA) – The
Department of Education Isabela City Schools Division gathered on Monday (Nov
19) the best pupils and students from the different schools in the elementary
and secondary levels to compete in the various contests of the 2012 Division
Science Quest.
In an interview, Division Science Supervisor
Catalina S. Nabi said that the competitors were the winners in their respective
schools, which is done yearly throughout the country. This year’s theme is
“Science and Technology Advancement for Lifelong Environment-Friendly and
Productivity Prospect.”
The purpose of the said competition, she said
is “to promote camaraderie and that this activity will enhance their knowledge
as the students learn from the different activities on science and technology.”
Nabi added that the pupils and students will
not only strengthen their competencies in terms of knowledge of science and
technology but also developing their creative and communication skills.
The pupils and students compete in various
activities with the Isabela East Central Elementary School in Isabela City
played host, such as science quiz, science-drama, collage-making, science intervention/improvisation,
on-the-spot painting, slogan-writing contest, science journalism, science art,
science trivia, impromptu speaking, essay writing, and the search for Ginoo at
Binibining Kalikasan.
She also underscored the need to enhance the
use of the English language as this is the medium of instruction in science.
“This is one way to help our students develop
totally, not only [developing their] intellect but also their emotional,
social, and other other skills,” Nabi said, noting that the opportunity for the
students to go out of their schools and meet other students is an opportunity
to gain more learning from the experience.
However, the science supervisor admitted that
some schools have a dearth of the needed facilities, instruments, and technology
to further the advancement of science education of the students in Isabela
City.
She said that it remains a challenge for
science teachers to equip students who will be taking the annual science and
technology scholarship examination offered by the Department of Science and
Technology (DOST).
In her message, DOST-ARMM provincial director
Myra M. Alih lauded the teachers for making education as a continuous process
by organizing activities beyond the four-wall corners of the classroom.
“My salutations for our mentors around for
transferring your knowledge, wisdom, and even the technology you have learned
from the new generation,” she said as she urged teachers to remain open to new
knowledge and study them through research and development “to keep us attuned
on the trends in science and technology” and to tech students to be more
innovative.
