ZAMBOANGA CITY, February 18 - - As part of the agency’s effort to achieve more efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 9 underwent a 5S + 1 Workshop on February 16 at the OWWA training room.
Fifteen (15) OWWA staff attended the lecture-workshop which was conducted by Engr. Al-Zamir Lipae, Division Chief of the Department of Trade & Industry.
The training was conducted in view of the need to standardize everyday activities leading to time-saving improvements.
Among the topics discussed were the 7 wastes in the office, types of workplace and the ways on how to organize a work space in order to achieve high levels of quality, safety & productivity through the 5S.
The 5S + 1 stands for Sorting; Straightening or Setting in Order; Sweeping or Shining; Standardizing; Sustaining the Discipline; and the remaining S means Safety.
Fauzia Amilasan, OWWA 9-OIC said “…this was conducted in view of the need to be efficient and effective in our day-to-day activities. We are receiving numerous clients every day so we have to build a clear understanding among employees of how work should be done by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items and sustaining the new order which is very much needed.”
“Basically, we have to start this year with standardization as a priority thrust to promote increased productivity & safeguard workers’ safety through adequate training & education.”, she added.
A workshop was done wherein an action plan was set by each employee specifying their commitment to implement 5S at a targeted timetable & frequency.
On the other hand, Engr. Lipae stressed the importance of “Commitment”, stating further that, “it depends if you’re going to adopt it, all you need is commitment & continuous education about maintaining standards to ensure that productivity will be sustained & improved upon.”
