DepED-IX holds 2nd reg’l fun days for special children

DIPOLOG CITY, Feb. 3 (PIA) – Children with special needs as well as gifted children from all over the region are now gathered in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur for their second regional fun days sponsored by the Special Education (SPED) unit of the Department of Education (DepED)-IX.

SPED teacher Ma. Theresa F. Dayrit of the Dipolog City SPED Center disclosed that the said activity would run for five days, starting Feb. 1-5.

Dayrit added that SPED pupils from this city would be competing with other SPED pupils from the city schools divisions of Dapitan, Pagadian, Isabela, and Zamboanga and the provincial schools divisions of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur in different sports and academic contests.

It was learned that the different competitions include battle of the brains, spelling bee, writing contest, dance sport and other sport events.

The special children participating in this activity are children with autism, intellectual disability, learning disability, visual impairment, hearing impairment, cerebral palsy, down syndrome and the so-called gifted and talented ones.

The activity, which gives the special children an opportunity to show off their talents despite their conditions, is part of the rehabilitation and training extended by the DepED’s special education program. (FPG/PIA-Zamboanga del Norte)
