DIPOLOG CITY, May
21 (PIA) - - A city councilor here is now an active advocate of environmental
protection, urging all and sundry especially the businessmen to adopt and
support the “no plastic bag day.”
Councilor James
Cyril O. Ruiz has recently sponsored a resolution asking the Dipolog
Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DFCCI) and the Dipolog
Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( DCCI)
to adopt and observe the no plastic bag use day each week in the city.
Ruiz said he would
like to instill in the hearts and minds of the people that caring for the
environment is everybody’s concern.
“Plastic materials
are non-biodegradable and they contribute to flooding and destruction of the
ozone layer,” he said.
Ruiz stressed that
the no plastic bag use day aims to increase public awareness on the dangers
wrought by plastic materials on the environment.
Plastic bags which
are made of polyethylene would take about a hundred years to decompose.
Some cities in the
country are already implementing the no plastic bag use day and the city known
for adopting this policy is Quezon City. (FPG/PIA-Zamboanga del Norte)
