Michael Manapol, President of the BCHS-BNHS Alumni Association said in a radio interview over DXNO-FM Radyo Komunidad de Isabela City, Basilan, that some 67,000 participants are expected to attend.

A grand alumni homecoming parade will kick-off the week-long homecoming activity today (April 18) around the city proper and will culminate at the BNHS grounds for the opening ceremony.

Days before the event, the different batches were busy building their booths and various meetings of different batches were held to prepare for the event.

Activities were lined-up for the homecoming 2012 from April 18 to 22, such as Alumni Sports fest on April 19-21, medical-social outreach program on April 19, testimonial luncheon for retired teachers on April 20, and bingo fund-raising and tree planting on April 21. The election of new set of Alumni Board of Directors and officers will be held on April 21.

The Basilan City High School (now Basilan National High School) opened its doors to the public in 1950 with one hundred twenty nine (129) students enrolled; ninety-eight (98) students in the first year and thirty-one (31) in the second year. Under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Rustico Navarro, as the first principal (1950-1955) and with the cooperation of the teaching staff composed of fifteen (15) teachers, the school progressed and in 1953 had its first graduates with thirty-nine students.

The school’s website reveals that during the incumbency of Mrs. Corazon T. Ceniza, the school was nationalized by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 709 which took effect on May 27, 1975. The principals who succeeded Mr. Navarro and worked hard to make the school grow were: Pedro Aguada (1955-1957), Mamerto De Leon (1957-1972), Corazon T. Ceniza (1972-1987), Vicente G. Fernandez (1987-1991),and  Purita J. Balladares (1991-1999). The incumbent administrator is Dr. Isa L. Ibrahim, the pioneering Muslim principal and an alumnus of this institution. (RVC/PIA-9 ZBST)
