FNRI-DOST reveals fruits with low Glycemic Index

ZAMBOANGA CITY, 21 Feb. (PIA 9) - - Here’s good news for diabetic and health conscious individual! The Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (or FNRI- DOST) has revealed of 13 fruits studied by the research institute to have contained low Glycemic Index (GI).

In a press statement, FNRI revealed that fruits such as Saba banana, papaya, red apple, guava and avocado have low GI. However, lakatan banana, pineapple and raisins have medium GI.

These low GI fruits are good for diabetics who have to monitor their blood glucose level and also for health buffs who watch their weight.

Glycemic index is a number representing the increase in the level of blood glucose when we eat food with carbohydrates.


FNRI statement further said it has produced and published a book on “Glycemic Index” back in 2011 to serve as health guide especially to diabetic patients and health conscious individual who are keen on their diet and weight.

“A book entitled “Glycemic Index or G.I. of commonly consumed carbohydrate foods in the Philippines” is now for sale at the FNRI-DOST at 250 pesos for the soft-bound and 300 pesos for the hard-bound copy,” the statement reads.

FNRI said “the book is a useful reference for diabetics who have to monitor their blood glucose level and also for health buffs who watch their weight.” (JPA/ FNRI-DOST/PIA- ZBST)
