Civil Society groups satisfied with DSWD programs

by Jocelyn P. Alvarez

ZAMBOANGA CITY, March 28 (PIA) - - “The civil society organizations (CSOs) are generally satisfied with the implementation of the various programs and services being implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), however, recommended certain courses of action if the agency were to expect more positive impact among the beneficiaries, particularly the poor and vulnerable sectors,” said Social Welfare Information officer for 4Ps Dominic Sanchez in a press statement.

Sanchez said this “satisfaction” rating was a direct result gathered during the recent consultation with CSOs for the agency’s 2013 budget preparation held in Zamboanga City where representatives of CSOs from all over Region IX attended.

“As part of its budget planning and preparation process, the DSWD consults with civil society organizations (CSOs) annually to discuss the effectiveness of the programs and projects it implements,” Sanchez said.

“The representatives urged the DSWD to intensify the monitoring of the programs such as the Pantawid Pamilya, so as to ensure that the goals of the project are met,” he informed.

According to Sanchez, DSWD Regional Director Teodulo Romo, Jr., sees the consultation as deemed necessary as its it is important to involve all the basic sectors of society in the budget preparation process as their involvement will potentially spell success in the implementation of the national government’s many programs and services.

“This occasion is a continuing effort to look into the (poverty) situation, and review existing programs and projects,” “Are they (the programs) responsive, or do they need to be changed and enhanced? You (the sector representatives) know the situation since you are among the people that we serve. Please tell us what needs to be improved.” Romo emphasized during the consultation.

Sanchez said “other local problems such as persisting human trafficking and the continuous deportation of Filipinos from Malaysia have also surfaced during the discussions. The sectors recommended the DSWD to intensify its information drive and advocacy efforts, especially in the communities where the presence of potential victims are many.”

During the said consultation, the persons with disabilities (PWDs) who are also among the participants “have recommended to enhance the chances of employment of qualified PWDs, as per Republic Act 7277, the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons.” (JPA/DIS/DSWD PIA 9- ZBST)
