By Jocelyn P. Alvarez

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Aug. 24 (PIA) - - To drumbeat promotion of healthy lifestyle, physical fitness  among Zamboangueños, and to intensify level of awareness on TB prevention and control, local government and private entities partnered for the conduct of “Zumba na Zambo” held recently at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan.

Zumba na Zambo is a physical fitness program that involves dance and aero-basics elements. It also includes some hip hop steps, soca, samba, salsa, meringue, mambo, martial arts and few bollywood and belly dance moves.

The dance exercise which was held early morning of Sunday was participated in by thousands of people from all ages and all walks of life.

Mayor Celso Lobregat who was himself present during the activity thanked the people for their participation and the organizers for coming up with such activity.

Meanwhile City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos said the activity was also aimed at intensifying awareness on tuberculosis prevention and cure. “Zamboanga City has reached its target on detection and cure rate of TB,” Dr. Agbulos said.

“We try to make people aware on prevention and control of diseases and smoking, since TB and smoking are interrelated,” he added.

Agbulos said TB is now curable and preventable and that the city has facility and capabilities to cure it.

“What is necessary is early detection and prevention by urging people showing symptoms of the disease to immediately consult with doctors or health workers in their respective barangays,” he was quoted as saying.

Zumba na Zambo was spearheaded by Hermosa TB Council in partnership with Rotary Club of Zamboanga, Linking Initiatives and Networking to Control TB (TB-LINC), Worl Vision-Social Mobilization on TB (SMT), Phil. Coalition Against Tuberculosis (Philcat), Zamboanga Coalition Against Tuberculosis (ZAMCAT), Dept. of Health, City Heakth Office, TB Task Force Zamboanga, AGAPE Human Dev’t Foundation Inc., and other concerned TB champions.
