DIPOLOG CITY, July 17 (PIA) - - Nobody was late nor absent among the 25
out-of-school youth (OSY) and unemployed adults coming from the different
barangays of La Libertad town who attended the recently concluded 36-day
training on automotive servicing (NC1), according to James Garduce, a TESDA accredited
instructor.
As one of the partner-agencies in La Libertad’s “Kurambos project,” the
Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-IX has augmented Technical Education
and Skills Development Authority’s (TESDA) training on automotive servicing by
providing the top graduates with starter kits worth P10,000 each.
A day before their graduation, DOLE also gave the trainees “Labor
Education for Graduating Students” (LEGS) sessions wherein they were taught
safety, health and accident prevention at work place, labor market information
and PhilJobnet, and the program on social welfare benefits for workers in the
informal sector.
No less than DOLE-IX Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano served as guest
of honor during the graduation exercises. He also personally awarded the starter
kits not only to the top five graduates but also to the other two trainees who
hurdled the trade test for this particular training.
During this occasion, Director Cano also turned over to Mayor Anjanette
H. Sulit checks amounting to P46,080 for the 48 poor but deserving students
enrolled under Special Employment for Students (SPES) program. These checks
represent the 40 percent of their salaries which, under this program, are to be
shouldered by DOLE.
In her message, Mayor Sulit expressed her great appreciation for the
various financial assistance extended by DOLE to her town under the “Project
Kurambos” citing among others the P100-thousand grant for the Cassava Kropeck
and P350-thousand provision for the common service facility on water kayaking
and river rafting project. “Indeed, Kurambos has chartered them toward doors of
opportunities for livelihood and employment,” said the lady mayor.
It can be recalled that said initiative has been recognized by the
International Labor Organization (ILO) with its P420 thousand funding
intervention for the enrollment of about 360 constituents in the actual
training-cum maintenance of the provincial road going to this interior
municipality. This was followed by a donation of the 2-unit heavy duty
solar-powered bulbs to light up its town plaza.
As emphasized by Mayor Sulit, Project Kurambos is a value-driven
Filipino orientation. “Kurambos” is a Cebuano word which means pooling of
resources, complementation of programs and convergence of services - synonymous
with such terms as “bayanihan,” “pintakasi,” “pagtinabangay,” (helping one
another) “alayon,”(working together) “hunlos,” (lending hands) “cooperation”
and the likes for a certain common cause.
In conceptualizing this project, the mayor believed that despite being
situated far beyond the corridor of commercial and industrial zone of the
province, the collaboration and alliance with the academe, non-government
organizations (NGOs) and national government agencies (NGAs) would help her
town do more for the good and welfare of her people.
