Police to recruit more sociologists, teachers, nurses to improve community relations, services

By Dominic I. Sanchez

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police Regional Office IX regional director Gen. Juanito Vaño invited sociologists, teachers and nurses to join their ranks as police officers, as they need more professionals to cater to the ever-changing terrain of law enforcement and community relations, during a radio interview Wednesday.

“The police force does not specifically require a BS Criminology course. In fact, we are encouraging and inviting teachers, sociologists, nurses and other professionals to join us,” Gen. Vaño said.

According to the director, the police’s primary thrust now is to reach out to and communicate with the communities. Many crimes such as kidnappings could have been prevented if community police relations were better. Thus, he is appealing specifically for sociologists and teachers to apply and be part of law enforcement.

“Sociologists are experts in the field of reaching out to the communities. With their knowledge, we can define more ways to have better relations with our people by feeling their pulse,” he said.

Nurses, on the other hand, are also a valuable human resource for the police. Since the police officers are front-liners not only during crimes but in any case of emergency, the nurse’s knowledge can be of great help to the victims – they can save lives.

Initial evaluation of interested applicants for this year’s screening will end June 28, and publication of the list of qualified applicants will be on June 29. Additional information can be found at the PRO-9’s official website, pro9.pnp.gov.ph. (PIA9)
