Fire victims to receive financial assistance from city gov’t

By Gideon C. Corgue

PAGADIAN CITY – Victims of the recent fire here that destroyed 33 houses will receive financial assistance from the city government this week.

This was announced by newly elected mayor Romeo Pulmones during the distribution of relief goods to the fire victims last June 20 at Kawit barangay hall.

It can be recalled that a fire, which completely destroyed 33 houses, occurred in Purok Bakhaw of said barangay last June 18.

“We will try our best to give the financial assistance on the first week of July,” Pulmones said adding that the emergency relief assistance fund could not be immediately released since it has to undergo proper accounting rules and procedures.

The chief executive said the assistance, though too small, is sincerely given.
“The amount to be given is too small to compensate the properties of the victims that they’ve lost to the fire but it is heartily given,” Pulmones said who also admitted that it was his first time to experience responding to the needs of the victims of a calamity.

The city government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) as well as the barangay council distributed relief goods worth P66,000 to the affected families.

Punong barangay Sangcadra Dimasar said that after convening the barangay council, it has donated P28,000 for the purchase of food items for the fire victims. “We have distributed rice and used clothing to the victims,” Dimasar said.

Meanwhile, fire victim Emma Malayan thanked the city government and barangay council for providing them relief goods.

“Akong gipasalamatan ang city government ug barangay konseho paghatag kanamo ug relief goods diin kami ilang gitabangan sa kalisod nga among nasinati (I thanked the city government and the barangay council for providing us relief goods, assisting us during the difficult times we went through),” said Malayan whose newly renovated house was completely razed by fire.
