Pres. Aquino declares July 1 special non-working day in Dipolog City

DIPOLOG CITY - President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared July 1, 2013 a Special Non-Working Holiday in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte in celebration of its 100th Foundation Day anniversary  with the theme, “Dipolog Soaring High after 100 years and Beyond.”

Pres. Aquino issued Proclamation Number 595 which was signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on June 6 declaring July 1, 2013 a Special Non-Working in Dipolog City to give the Dipolognons the full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.

The centennial celebration started last June 24 with a thanksgiving mass at the Holy Rosary Cathedral followed by opening ceremonies of Panagsangka 2013, a parade along the city’s main thoroughfares, video presentation, and a presentation by the Sangguniang Kabataan at the Dipolog Boulevard.

One of the highlights of the weeklong celebration is the formal oath-taking of the newly-elected officials of Dipolog City and Zamboanga del Norte headed by Dipolog City Mayor Evelyn T. Uy and Governor-elect Roberto Uy.

The city’s centennial celebration will culminate on July 1 with Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV as guest speaker.

Later in the evening, David Pomeranz, an international performer will also have his concert at the city boulevard.

Dipolog was separated from Dapitan in 1912 through a decree issued by then Governor John  Pershing of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu. It became a municipality on July 1, 1913 with Mayor Pascual T. Martinez as its first municipal mayor.

On June 6, 1952, the Philippine Congress approved Republic Act 711, naming Dipolog as the capital town of Zamboanga del Norte. (PIA9)
