By Mary Jane R. Amarado

ZAMBOANGA CITY - - The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 9 is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Model OFW Family Awards (MOFYA).

Now on its 8th year, the agency continues its aim to highlight the success of OFWs and their families in overcoming the challenges of migration.

“We are again in search of land-based and sea-based Model OFW Families,” said Hassan Gabra Jumdain, OWWA 9 Regional Director.

He added that, “Model families who have nurtured strong family relations and properly managed the financial benefits from overseas employment will be chosen from each of the country’s seventeen (17) regions.”

Jumdain also stressed that the award will serve as a strategic mechanism for exemplifying the best practices of OFW Families towards optimizing the gains of migration, thus it underscores the challenges hurdled by the OFW families.

To qualify for the MOFYA, the family must be headed by an OFW, formerly or presently working abroad. The criteria for selection are as follows; Wholesome OFW Family 50%, Civic / Community Involvement of OFW 20%, Success in children’s or family member/s education 20% and Success in Managing Family Finances 10%.

The National Awardees are then selected from 17 sets of regional awardees.  Two more awardees are conferred special awards: Outstanding Achievement in Community Projects and Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship who will be proclaimed and honored in the awarding ceremonies set on November 20, 2012.

Jumdain urges religious groups, community-based socio-civic organizations, OFW non-government organizations, peoples’ organizations, and local government units to submit their nominations at the OWWA Office, 4th floor BGIDC Corporate Center, Gov. Lim Ave., Zamboanga City.

Nomination forms and other details are available and may be downloaded from the OWWA website: www.owwa.gov.ph.
