WESCOM Bikers supports World Day for Water 2012

ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Mar 20 (PIA) – As we observe the World Day for Water on 22 March 2012, Team Western Command (WESCOM) Bikers will support and participate on this year’s “Bike-Fun-Ride” on the 24th of March organized by the Puerto Princesa City Water District (PPCWD).

The 6th Civil Relations Group of the AFP disclosed that the event would jumpstart at six in the morning steering from Baywalk (Barangay San Isidro) to Barangay Irawan Watershed in Puerto Princesa City. Hundreds of bikers from different organizations, private groups and individuals are expected to join the activity.

Concluding the Bike-Fun-Ride is a tree planting activity requiring each participant to plant at least five trees at Campo Uno, Barangay Irawan, Puerto Princesa City.

Irawan Watershed is a primary water source of Puerto Princesa residents. The tree-planting in conjunction with the World Day for Water is geared to maintain the water table and restore wildlife habitat in the watershed.

World Water Day has been observed on 22 March since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared 22 March as World Day for Water. This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Observance began in 1993 and has grown significantly ever since.

Each year, one of various UN agencies involved in water issues takes the lead in promoting and coordinating international activities for World Water Day. Since its inception in 2003, UN-Water has been responsible for selecting the theme, messages and lead UN agency for the World Day for Water.
