PAGADIAN CITY, Mar. 29 (PIA) -- Not minding the scorching heat of the sun , selected high school students from the secondary schools of both private and public schools of the city on Monday morning gleefully participated the 2-hour drum and lyre competition at the oval of Pagadian City gym.
The event is one of the highlights of the 75th founding anniversary of the city dubbed “Diamond Jubilee” celebration.
Seven (7) schools participated the said event, namely: Lison Valley national high school , Napolan national high school, Southern Mindanao Colleges (annex) , Tawagan Sur national high school , Zamboanga del Sur national high school (main campus), Zamboanga del Sur national high school (Sta. Lucia annex), and Zamboanga del Sur school of arts and trades (ZSSAT).
Drum and lyre competition chairperson Rodita Caseñas said Napolan national high school got the nod from the judges as the champion, followed by the Zamboanga del Sur national high school (main campus) as second placer, and Tawagan Sur national high school as third placer.
Caseñas said the three (3) lucky winners received the following prizes: P6,000 – champion, 5,000- 2nd placer, and 4,000- third placer, while the non-winners received 1,000 each. Participating contingents received also certificate of participation.
Caseñas said the competition aimed not only to provide entertainment to the public but to encourage also the schools to put up Drum and Lyre corps in their respective institutions so that students can hone their skills in playing their respective instruments for a certain period of time.
Caseñas said the city officials have observed that the drum and lyre corps, who played important pride to the schools are now dwindling. “In this competition, we encouraged the schools to put up and maintain a Drum and Lyre corps because they are public main attraction,” Caseñas concluded.
The judges were composed of 1st Infantry assistant division commander Col. Felecito M. Trinidad, as chairman and members Dr. Lorenzo Macapili, TESDA regional office, Claro Lanipa, Philippine Information Agency, Maxima T. Alconera, Commission on Higher Education, and Mario Shojie Romararate , DepEd, regional office. (JPA/GCC/PIA9-Zambosur)
