Dia Job Fair hired 600—PESO

ZAMBOANGA CITY, 01 March. (PIA 9) - - The recently concluded job fair held in line with the celebration of the 75th Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga hired over 600 workers for both local and international placements, records from the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) show.

PESO Manager and City Social Welfare Officer Francisco Barredo said out of the total 1, 129 registrants, 49 were hired on the spot by local companies while 508 qualified to work abroad for a total of  607 actual hiring.

Barredo said the 49 newly hired employees of the different local companies will start working today while the 508 will begin their trade test to be conducted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

The said job fair was one of the numerous programs that the City has been staging to provide job-related opportunities its constituents and even applicants from the neighboring cities and provinces.

Last year, the City PESO was awarded as the Regional Best PESO Performer, facilitating the hiring of over a thousand job seekers.

The program, which was part of the calendar of events for the 75th Dia de Zamboanga, was organized by the City Government, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-9) and supported by the Philippine Overseas Employment Authority, TESDA, and Department of Foreign Affairs.

 The job fair, held at the Plaza Pilar, kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Celso Lobregat together with the DOLE-9 OIC Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano.

During the same program, Cano turned-over the self-employment starter kits to 11 overseas Filipino workers who decided to stay in the City for good. The kit includes a sewing machine and some tailoring materials and paraphernalia that would allow them to start a home-based business.

Meanwhile, the Eperanza-a self-employed association of women was also turned-over with a check amounting to P324, 520 as part of the conduit program of DOLE known as the Alternative Center for Organizational Reforms and Development. (JPA/RA/CIO/PIA- ZBST)
