ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sept. 5 (PIA) -- The “mini-boat race” in the city’s Sucabon River in Zone 2 is fast becoming a tourist attraction in the city’s urban barangays.
“Your boat-race activity is helping bolster barangay tourism,” said Committee Chair on Tourism Councilor Gerky Valesco during the annual mini boat race event held recently.
In his keynote speech, Valesco lauded the ingenuity and inventiveness of the barangay council of Zone 2.
The city tourism committee chair said he supports such move as it motivates people to clean the waterways which translates to a dengue free area.
Valesco also said “there is excitement and expectations in the mini boat race as it attracts resident from neighboring barangays.”
The mini boat race held recently is the ninth year in a row since its first staging in 2003.
Barangay Zone 2 Cahirman Nonito Aranas said the activity is a way of motivating the residents to clean the waterways and creeks of garbage and wastes, one way of preventing the threat of dengue in the area.
